QRI-5 vs. DIBELS
Both DIBELS and the QRI-5 are very important and beneficial ways to assess reading, fluency and accuracy of students. They are both done periodically and prove to help many students learn to read well. The teacher uses the results of both of these to see who needs intervention and to see where the student is struggling. DIBELS is not used to assess high school, and the QRI-5 is used from pre-k-12 grade.
The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of early literacy skills. They are designed to be short fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills. It is a formal, STANDARDIZED reading assessment with various components. The way it is tallied up is as follows: Count and record the total number of errors. Subtract the errors from the total and record the words read correctly .
The Qualitative Reading Inventory-5 (QRI-5) IS an individually administered informal reading inventory designed to provide information about conditions under which students can identify words and comprehend text successfully and conditions that appear to result in unsuccessful word identification or comprehension. It has many different assessment options. It starts that the student reads words and continues on from level to level until her score is at frustrational level. She does that with reading passages, having good comprehension on the passages and reading with accuracy and fluency. The results of it are used to estimate students reading levels to group them for guided reading, or to chooses appropriate books for literacy circles and independent reading. In the QRI-5, the individualized score is evaluated in terms of the scores of the individual. Standardized instruments are administered in the same way for all students. The QRI-5 focuses a lot also on comprehension, retelling of main details in a passage etc, not only on words.
